Joe Konefal

Joseph W. Konefal, Jr. serves as an instructor in the Forensic and Fire and Rescue programs of the International Academy of Public Safety, specializing in the fire, arson, bomb, and explosion disciplines.

Mr. Konefal is a former supervising arson investigator, bomb investigator, and bomb technician for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Office of the State Fire Marshal from which he retired after a 30+ year career. He was employed as a public safety officer with the City of Sunnyvale, California, Department of Public Safety for nine years before going into state service.

Mr. Konefal holds a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice administration from San Jose State University and an Associate in Science degree in fire science from Mission College, Santa Clara, California.

Mr. Konefal has investigated fires, explosions, and has rendered safe improvised explosive devices since 1984. He has testified as an expert witness on fire, explosion, and explosive related incidents in courts throughout California.

Mr. Konefal is an adjunct instructor in fire technology for the Los Rios Community College District and Sierra College for the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology’s Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center. He has also been a post-blast instructor for the post-blast investigation course contracted through the U.S. State Department and is a member of the California State Fire Training‘s Curriculum Development Committee for Fire, Arson, and Explosion Investigation.

Mr. Konefal remains active as a training consultant on issues related to fire, arson, bomb & explosion investigation, render safe and post-blast investigations, and is a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), the California Conference of Arson Investigators, Chapter 22 of the IAAI (President 2003), and the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI).
